A graphics processor unit found in many modern consumer devices. GPUs became an important part of the cryptocurrency space due to their processing capabilities. While a CPU can perform highly complex calculations, GPUs are designed to handle less complex, but massively parallel calculations. This has made them quite effective at running the algorithms necessary for cryptocurrency mining (for similar reasons GPUs are also used in the security industry to attack encrypted files). The GPUs used in mining are typically consumer video cards, most often from AMD due to low level architectural difference that make them better suited for this specialized processing. These can be chained together in complex arrangements to achieve higher performance per dollar of hardware.
